What is Bespoke Jewellery?

You may have heard the term being used, but what is bespoke jewellery and why should it interest you? I explore this wonderful way of creating jewellery in more detail below.

What is bespoke jewellery?

If you haven’t heard of it before, bespoke jewellery describes a custom piece of jewellery that has been made to the specifications of a client. It is truly original and unique to the recipient. It has the power to be a truly sentimental piece that will be treasured by the customer for many years to come.

I really enjoy working with clients to create bespoke jewellery for them; to ensure that their vision can become a reality. Whether it is a ring, a necklace, or something else entirely, I feel passionate about designing a piece of jewellery that meets the client’s request and is truly one-of-a-kind. You can see an example of some bespoke pieces I have had the pleasure of working on here.

Why might you commission a piece of bespoke jewellery?

An engagement ring

A popular option for bespoke jewellery is creating a unique engagement ring for your partner. This gives you the opportunity to give them a piece of jewellery that they will love, and perhaps you can even use an existing stone that has meaning for them. While diamonds are popular for engagement rings, bespoke rings can be made from emeralds, sapphires, rubies and other stones.

A special birthday

If you want to mark a significant birthday for a family member or loved one, you can celebrate by commissioning a bespoke piece of jewellery for them, such as a necklace or bracelet, maybe also to incorporate something memorable or truly meaningful to them. This is something they will treasure for many years to come and it will always remind them of that special day.

An anniversary present

If you want to give something truly special to your other half on your anniversary, bespoke jewellery is a great option for this too. You can design a piece that holds a special meaning and they will be sure to love it!

A gift to yourself

A bespoke piece of jewellery doesn’t have to be a gift for someone else! If you want to celebrate a specific time or event in your life or simply treat yourself, rather than buying something from the high street, you can have a piece specially made to suit your tastes and be a wonderful memory of that moment.

Converting an old piece

Another popular reason for requesting a piece of bespoke jewellery is to make a new piece from one that already exists. You might have a family heirloom that has been passed down through generations that you want to treasure, but also modernise it so that it is more wearable.

How does the bespoke jewellery process work?

I explore this in more detail in my blog on the jewellery design process, but I’ve included a brief outline of the process below:

  • First, I like to meet with my client to understand their reasons for making the piece and the inspiration behind it.
  • I then work on creating a more technical and specific brief with the client, including the stones, metals and type of setting they might want.
  • After that, I create an initial sketch design and review this with the client.
  • Once the client is happy with the initial concept and design, we will then create a CAD (computer-aided design) image to be approved by the client.
  • Once the design is finalised and approved, I will acquire the materials and one of our talented artisans can work to create the piece!
